Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) is a Black-led, membership-based organization of primarily low- to moderate-income Central Brooklyn residents. They have built power and supported self-determination for the residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights by nurturing local leaders who organize campaigns on food justice, ending street harassment, anti-gentrification efforts and police accountability.

They serve on the Steering Committee of Communities United for Police Reform, and kept the pressure on Brooklyn city council members who were strong allies in passing Intro 541 (the “consent to search” bill) in December 2017.

In addition to their work being featured on WNBC, NY1, WNYC, BRIC, the Daily News and a host of other traditional media outlets, you can find their leaders creating local citizen journalism online at Brooklyn Deep. Brooklyn Deep is where Central Brooklynites publish stories, podcasts and online videos to share their truth on issues such as gentrification, police harassment, street harassment and school violence.

We’re recognizing Brooklyn Movement Center for creating an intersectional organizing space that centers Black leadership that takes on the complex range of issues affecting the lives of New Yorkers.

Join us on April 17, 2018 to honor Brooklyn Movement Center and the community of leaders who are building movements for justice in New York.
